This afternoon, PPOA received the information below from the Sheriff’s Department:
“The Department just received word that the Los Angeles Community College District (LACCD) will not be renewing its security contract with the Sheriff’s Department when the current contract expires on December 31, 2020. The LACCD does not want armed law enforcement personnel providing security on their campuses any longer, they only want unarmed security personnel. Unfortunately, the Department is not in a position to accommodate this new model of security services as requested by the LACCD. Therefore, effective January 1, 2021, the Community College Bureau will be demobilized and all of its existing personnel will be reassigned throughout the Department. Additional information will be provided to you on the Department’s plan to address this demobilization effort as soon as it becomes available.”
The PPOA Board of Directors, including newly-sworn-in Unit 621 Director Henry Jimenez, who represents Security Officers and Security Assistants, is awaiting further information on this development. Communication with the Sheriff Department and County executives has been initiated and PPOA will provide an update to members as soon as specific details become available.
