Free Non-Job-Related Legal Advice
A free one-hour consultation with an attorney is available each year for all full-dues paying PPOA members.
Free Insurance Coverage
All active, full-time PPOA members are provided with a $2,000 life insurance and $4,000 accidental death and dismemberment policy at no cost, carried by VOYA Insurance.
Legal Defense Plan
Active PPOA members are provided with defense coverage for civil and criminal actions arising in the scope of duties.
Peace Officers Relief Fund (PORF)
All active, full-time L.A. County employees who are sworn peace officers as defined by California Penal Code Section 830.1 and belong to collective Bargaining Unit 612 (LASD/LADA Sergeants and Lieutenants) are participants at no cost.
- Long-term disability: After 90 days of continuous disability, under the care of a licensed physician, the monthly benefit is 60% of basic gross monthly earnings up to a maximum of $4,300 or a minimum monthly payment of $100. Other income received at the time of disability is taken into consideration.
- Life insurance: A benefit of $125,000 is paid for loss of life.

PPOA Mobile Barbecue
In 2016, PPOA purchased a barbecue trailer as a means to help the Board and staff meet with members at assignments throughout the county while providing freshly grilled meals. We also plan to use the trailer to support law enforcement employees deployed to critical incidents.

Labor Representation
Effective, experienced labor representation is available for all active PPOA members, 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. Representation is provided for grievances, IAB interviews, admin appeals (including Skelly) and more.

PPOA members benefit from the expertise of attorneys specializing in everything from workers’ compensation to the Peace Officers’ Bill of Rights. Every active PPOA member is afforded representation from an attorney for ERCOM/civil service, use of force and shootings.
Negotiations
PPOA is the exclusive bargaining agent for units 612, 614, 621 and 631. PPOA members from these units negotiate for wages, hours and working conditions, and only PPOA members have the right to ratify a potential contract.
Legislation/Political Muscle
PPOA members have benefited from the union’s legislative strategies for nearly four decades. Diligent work from PPOA’s full-time lobbying in Sacramento has resulted in hundreds of laws being passed that directly affect PPOA members.
