James Edward Vogts III Timeline

February 12, 1943 – April 25, 2018

1943

  • Born at Georgetown University Hospital in Washington, D.C.
  • Served as a page for U.S. Senator Estes Kefauver
  • Attended school on upper floor of Library of Congress
  • Served in U.S. Army (military police)

1969

  • Graduated Los Angeles County Marshal’s Academy
  • Joined the Los Angeles County Professional Peace Officers Assocation (PPOA)

1972

  • Appointed as legislative advocate for the L.A. County Marshals Association

1974

  • Elected to PPOA Board of Directors

1985

  • Appointed as one of nine original members of the California Peace Officers’ Commission — the driving force behind the establishment of the iconic bronze California Peace Officers’ Memorial monument that stands at the foot of the State Capitol

1994

  • Elected PPOA president shortly after Marshal/Sheriff merger

1998

  • Retired as sergeant with the L.A. County Sheriff’s Department

1999

Began work as full-time PPOA lobbyist in Sacramento. Also represented:

  • Santa Ana Police Officers Association
  • Fraternal Order of Police
  • Long Beach Police Officers Association

2006

  • Earned Lifetime Achievement Award from Golden Badge Foundation

2014

  • Retired from lobbying but continued serving as legislative consultant for PPOA

2018

  • Survived by his wife of 46 years, Debbie Vogts, along with two daughters and a son
