Hello, partners. I hope all is well at work and in your personal lives. As we continue to do our best to fill the vacancies from the staff shortage, try your best to clear your mind and make time to be around friends, family and loved ones. There will always be a shift that needs coverage, an SSO and SSA coming down the line, but there will only be one you, so do not lose sight of the truly meaningful people and events in our lives. Make time for those you love.
A few events and updates have occurred these past few weeks, but there is potential for reinforcements coming soon.
SHERIFF SECURITY OFFICER AND SHERIFF SECURITY ASSISTANT SURVEY
In early April, the Sheriff Security Officer and Sheriff Security Assistant survey was emailed to members to gauge the needs and priorities of individuals in the Department and to gather information to present to the Department and County.
APRIL SHERIFF SECURITY ASSISTANT ACADEMY CLASS
Sheriff Security Assistant Class #24-1 began on April 18 and will graduate on May 3. For the new members, I thank you for joining PPOA and welcome you aboard.
PROPOSED JUNE SHERIFF SECURITY OFFICER ACADEMY CLASS
As I write this article, a proposed Academy class for Sheriff Security Officers is scheduled for some time in June, pending County approval. I am hoping to hear the details are finalized, the class gets approved and we get the much-needed backup.
BODY-WORN CAMERA TRAINING
Sheriff Security Officers in the Community College Bureau attended the body-worn camera training in late March. According to the Body Worn Camera Unit, the next group to receive training will be those assigned to the County Services Bureau. Before arriving at this or other training, please be sure to have your Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) identification number. You can get your ID number by visiting the POST website (post.ca.gov) and entering your name, birthdate and the last four digits of your Social Security number in the Obtain Your POST ID section. If you cannot obtain it, please email me and I will help you get it.
SMALL STEPS TOWARD MAJOR CHANGES
Lastly, in March, I had the opportunity to meet and speak with Sheriff Luna. I introduced myself and spoke with him about issues with the civilian security field in the Department. Although it was a short conversation, I felt it was a positive discussion. He was very receptive to our concerns, thanked our classifications for what we do and agreed that we have things to work on together. I will try to get together with him again and be more detailed about the concerns of Sheriff Security Assistants and Sheriff Security Officers and what we feel would improve our classification.
As always, if you have any questions or concerns, or just need someone to talk to, please contact me at (323) 400-9590 or lorozco@ppoa.com. Stay safe.
