Hello, fellow PPOA members. I hope everybody is in good health. Let’s get into the meat and potatoes of what’s occurring on the union side of issues and progress. The first issue as we continue to go through this year is the fact that we are still waiting for an opportunity to meet with Sheriff Luna regarding topics of interest to Sheriff’s Security Officers and Security Assistants. A prime example is the subject of our uniforms. The Sheriff is dealing with other topics, from funding to shortages and personnel issues. Just be patient, and we will get some time to meet with him. In addition, many members have expressed interest in using the exterior vest during inclement weather and during certain details. We will bring this issue to the Sheriff, as well.
As we speak, we will be meeting and conferring on issues brought to PPOA’s attention and will keep everyone informed. The Department has allocated funding for a Security Officer academy class, and one was scheduled to start at the time this issue was going to press (late March). Hopefully, the increase in personnel will come in late April or early May when they complete the Academy. Relief is on the way.
The Department is 155 Sheriff’s Security Officers short. As for the Sheriff’s Security Assistant, there is a shortage of about 100. Please be patient as we go through this rough patch of being drafted and being held over. Some of you have seen me working with County Services and Colleges as I’m doing what I can to help. There are many fellow co-workers who also help by working with other bureaus while supporting their own respective bureaus. Thank you for keeping me informed. I understand we have family get-togethers and sometimes just need some rest and relaxation.
Those of you who have a CCW need to make sure to follow the instructions on the renewal process. Please don’t wait until the last minute to turn in the forms. The quicker you complete them, the better.
Some of you have expressed interest in changing from the Beretta to the Smith & Wesson firearm. We are collecting names to pass along to the Department so we can hopefully get this taken care of for personnel requesting the change.
During our PPOA Board planning session, I brought up the topic of 4850 time (IOD pay) for Sheriff’s Security personnel. We have looked at the labor code, and we are consulting with attorneys to take the next step. I will share more information as we get it.
As some of you get closer to retirement, make sure to reach out to LACERA and Horizons. Set up an appointment and make sure to take all the important documents so you can get situated for the next step beyond your career. Please also reach out to PPOA if you are having a retirement event. I would enjoy stopping by if you have a get-together.
I know some have requested information about movement and transfers and how those processes work during shortages. Make sure to keep up to date on what locations interest you. Sometimes, movements may occur at short notice, and by the time your transfer is processed, it may be too late to cancel the movement.
As we continue into the next few months, make sure to keep an eye on each other. Stay safe until the next time, and work as a team.
