Preparation Is Key to Getting the Most From Your Retirement

Preparation Is Key to Getting the Most From Your Retirement

When I was a young deputy sheriff, I didn’t think much about retirement. But as time passed, I realized how important it is to prepare for it. One of the things on my “to-do list” is to schedule an appointment with LACERA to ensure a smooth transition into the next chapter of my life. After committing 26 years to LASD, planning for when it’s time to hang up my badge, like many of you, will be essential. One thing that often comes up when discussing retirement with fellow PPOA members is the issue of financial security. While law enforcement officers are usually eligible for pensions, it’s important to have additional savings and investments to ensure a comfortable retirement. Read More

Your Two Favorite Subjects: Colonoscopies and Retiree Health Care Costs

I am glad many of you read my articles! I hear back regularly from those who comment, but this past month was pretty good! I am going to take this month to remind you to get off your arses and make sure your preventive medical issues are addressed. I just had surgery for melanoma, and it is a scary thing. When I was young, sun exposure wasn’t really a concern. I never wore a hat on duty (Smokey hats didn’t go with Class B heat uniform), and I rarely used sunscreen. LASD Teens Graduate From Devil Pups Camp

LASD Teens Graduate From Devil Pups Camp

The Sheriff’s Department has been able to send exemplary boys and girls to this program because of the generous support of the Association for Los Angeles Deputy Sheriffs (ALADS), the Los Angeles County Professional Peace Officers Association (PPOA) and Sheriffs’ Relief Association (SRA). We are so very grateful for their financial support. We couldn’t do it without their generous assistance! This summer camp prepares young men and women, ages 14 to 17, for what life will bring. The training takes on a new meaning when it is instilled by sweat and active-duty Marine Corps instructors yelling and hurrying these teens throughout their day and guiding them through their training. Fraternal Order of Police 66th Biennial Conference

Fraternal Order of Police 66th Biennial Conference

PPOA representatives joined thousands of fellow Fraternal Order of Police (FOP) delegates at the 66th Biennial National Conference and Expo in Las Vegas last month. This event is hosted every two years in order for FOP leaders to set the goals and agenda for the organization. The conference also included seminars, a review of the FOP constitution and bylaws, the election of Executive Board members, and exhibitors from all over the country showcasing their law enforcement-related products and services. PPOA members, active and retired, have long benefited from our affiliation with the FOP, the world’s largest organization of law enforcement officers, with more than 364,000 members in more than 2,100 lodges nationwide.
