12th Annual PPOA Scholarship Awards
PPOA proudly issued our annual college scholarship awards to a group of very dedicated and deserving students this morning. Since the inception of this program, PPOA has been honored to contribute more than $150,000 toward the educational goals of our members and their sons/daughters. The 2023 recipients included the dependents of PPOA members enrolled at colleges across the nation and pursuing degrees in architecture, criminal justice, biology and more. We were particularly honored to award the Lars Burkhardt Memorial Scholarship to an active PPOA member who is working toward his degree while fulfilling his commitment as a Sheriff’s Security Officer. We wish the best to each student and are grateful to their family members who joined us at today’s ceremony. Special thanks to LASD Chief Jorge Valdez for his participation and support. We are also extremely grateful to the following law firms for their commitment as corporate sponsors of PPOA’s Star & Shield Foundation: • Lewis, Marenstein, Wicke, Sherwin and Lee • Straussner, Sherman, Lonne, Treger and Helquist (Names of scholars are withheld in the interest of privacy.)
15th Annual Peace Officer Memorial Golf Tournament
PPOA was honored to bring together nearly 200 law enforcement personnel, supporters, volunteers and sponsors on Monday for our Peace Officer Memorial Golf Tournament at Friendly Hills Country Club in Whittier. This annual event is the primary vehicle for PPOA’s Star & Shield Foundation to raise the critical funds needed to support the families of fallen officers. We want to thank our tournament sponsor, the Law Offices of James J. Cunningham, and the extensive, impressive list of sponsors who step forward year after year to help us honor fallen heroes.
54th Annual Los Angeles County Peace Officers’ Memorial
PPOA is proud to provide support for the LA County Peace Officers’ Memorial ceremony each year. Yesterday’s ceremony at Biscailuz Center brought together law enforcement personnel and families of fallen officers to honor the memory of our brothers and sisters who died in the line of duty. We will never, ever forget their service and sacrifice. Photos by Greg Torres/PPOA
77th Annual STAR POST 309 Tree Planting Ceremony
PPOA was honored to attend today’s American Legion Star Post #309 Tree-Planting Ceremony honoring two fallen LASD members: retired Commander Walt Allsop and Sergeant Christopher Bracks. Both men were armed forces veterans and lifelong public servants.

LASD Retiree Roundup 2023
Another LASD Retiree Roundup is in the books and, as always, PPOA was honored to be a part of it. Every year, it’s a blessing to see so many friends reunite with former colleagues, academy classmates, radio car partners, supervisors, trainees, and the best war-story tellers in the business. The Cigar Night on the patio hosted by PPOA was a lot of fun and we’re grateful to all who attended. Special thanks to Moon and Robyn Mullen, Charlie Engelbart and the tireless volunteers who make the Roundup so memorable every year.
