PPOA Board Leadership Update: August 2022

At the PPOA board of directors meeting on August 10, 2022, Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department (LASD) Lieutenant Nancy Escobedo was selected by board members to serve as PPOA President. The board also selected LASD Sergeant Jose Rios to serve as 1st Vice President and Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office Sergeant Jay Chapman to serve as board secretary.
  • President Escobedo had been providing leadership in the role of interim president since Tab Rhodes resigned as president at the July board meeting. She is a 25-year LASD veteran who was originally hired as an evidence and property custodian in 1997 before being promoted to custody assistant in 1999, deputy in 2001, sergeant in 2014 and lieutenant in 2020.
  • 1st Vice President Rios is a 24-year department veteran and formerly served as PPOA board secretary. He also served as an ALADS board member from 2014 to 2016.
  • Board Secretary Chapman has 19 years of dedicated law enforcement experience and joined the PPOA board in January 2022.
 
PPOA is grateful to all three executive board members for stepping forward to provide professional and experienced leadership.

Re-Elect Captain Shawn Kehoe in Crucial LACERA Election

On August 5th, LACERA Safety Members will receive an important email. This will be sent to your department email address and will include instructions for voting electronically or by phone for the LACERA election. Please note that ballots will not be mailed to your home. The PPOA Board of Directors has once again unanimously voted to endorse Captain Shawn Kehoe and urges all Safety members to vote to re-elect the 24-year LASD veteran to represent the interests of PPOA members on both the LACERA Board of Retirement and the Board of Investments.

PPOA Endorses Alex Villanueva for LA County Sheriff

The Professional Peace Officers Association (PPOA) announced on June 29th it has officially endorsed Los Angeles County Sheriff Alex Villanueva in his bid for re-election this November. Sheriff Villanueva faces retired Long Beach Police Chief Robert Luna in the upcoming general election scheduled for November 8, 2022.
 
In a special PPOA Board Meeting in June, after discussions about both candidates and potential impacts on PPOA membership, the PPOA Board of Directors came to the decision to endorse Sheriff Villanueva.
 
“While both candidates are law enforcement leaders in the community, membership has voiced their concerns about stability within the Department and the possibility of another executive from an outside agency leading LASD” said PPOA President Tab Rhodes. “Ultimately, the PPOA Board of Directors endorsed Sheriff Villanueva due to his many years of experience with the complexities of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department.”

ADDA Statement re: Gascón Appealing Ruling that Voided His Directive Against 3-Strikes Allegations

July 15, 2022 – Last month, a unanimous Court of Appeals panel reminded George Gascón that “[h]e is an elected official who must comply with the law, not a sovereign with absolute, unreviewable discretion.” He obviously disagrees with that basic premise.
 
Now he has appealed that ruling because he believes separation of powers is a “dangerous precedent” and because he is convinced that the rule of law doesn’t apply to him.
He demands the unprecedented authority to act as both the executive and the legislative branch. He believes his election is a mandate from the voters that vests him with unlimited power to impose his personal ideology, even when doing so means disregarding the will of the voters, the legislators, and the governor who enacted the three strikes laws.
He insists on treating first time offenders and repeat offenders the same. Yet the “science and data” on which he relies dissolves under basic scrutiny.
The public should recall that he ran on the promise that his policies would deliver safer communities. Now he denies responsibility for the rising crime that is affecting all our communities.
